【报告摘要】

China has been undertaking several major ecosystem restoration programs since the late 1990s, including the Sloping Land Conversion Program (SLCP) and the Natural Forest Protection Program (NFPP). And these programs have been expected to not only substantially mitigate the regional ecological degradation and rural poverty but also significantly contribute to the global cause of sustainable development. How effective have they been in achieving the restoration targets set by the government? What are their induced socioeconomic and environmental impacts? How to improve the design and implementation of these and other similar programs? This presentation will address those questions based on a large body of empirical evidence the author and his collaborators have obtained from their integrative and interdisciplinary assessment of the programs. It is hoped that China’s experience and lessons will be of broad in terms of restoring degraded ecosystems and achieving sustainable development.
